Camping in Sri Lanka offers some of the most breathtaking and rewarding experiences for nature enthusiasts. Our recent adventure was no exception, as we took off on a journey that tested our endurance, rewarded us with stunning vistas, and allowed us to connect with fellow adventurers.

The Journey Begins

Our day began early, catching the Badulla-Panadura bus from the Panadura CTB stand at approximately 6 am. Despite the bus not being overly crowded, we were unable to secure seats, making for an interesting start to our journey. The three-hour bus ride was filled with anticipation as we watched the landscapes change, finally arriving at Kalupahana junction around 9:30 am.

Climbing Through the Pine Forest

From Kalupahana, we began our ascent. The first part of our hike took us through a serene pine forest. The unique experience of walking on the crunchy twigs underfoot was both different and delightful. Along the way, we encountered several picturesque spots that demanded photo stops, capturing the beauty of our surroundings.

The climb was challenging, testing our physical limits, but every step was worth it. By 2 pm, we reached the summit and our first camping site. The sense of accomplishment was immense, proving that hard work indeed pays off.

Setting Up Camp

We had carried 6 liters of water, and by the time we reached the top, half of it was already consumed. Fortunately, there was a water brook just a five-minute walk from our campsite, ensuring we had enough water for the rest of our stay.

At the campsite, we found several other groups of campers. One kind group shared their lunch with us, which they had packed before starting their hike. This generous gesture meant we didn’t need to cook our lunch, as we had originally planned.

After our meal, we set out to gather firewood for a small campfire. The evening was filled with fun and photography, capturing the essence of our adventure. Around 7 pm, a light drizzle began, but it was brief and didn’t dampen our spirits. We ended the night by cooking some noodles for dinner, sharing stories, and enjoying the tranquility of the mountains.

A Sunrise to Remember

The next morning, we awoke at 6 am, eager to witness the sunrise. We were fortunate that the sky was clear, providing us with unobstructed views of the sun emerging over the horizon. The sunrise was a magical moment, one that we captured with our cameras to cherish forever.

The Descent and a Refreshing End

Packing our bags, we began our descent. The journey down was much easier, taking only about two hours. Once we reached the base, we treated ourselves to a refreshing bath in Wali-oya, washing away the fatigue of our hike.

Finally, we boarded a bus back to Panadura, our hearts full of memories and a sense of fulfillment from our adventure.

The End

Camping in Sri Lanka, especially in places as beautiful as the pine forests near Kalupahana, offers an escape from the mundane and a chance to reconnect with nature. Our journey was filled with challenges, kindness from strangers, and moments of awe-inspiring beauty. It's an experience that we will remember and cherish for a lifetime.
