Being quarantined at home

During COVID-19, I adapted to working from home, setting up a productive routine and using virtual tools to stay connected. Despite initial challenges, I found ways to stay motivated and balanced, leading to personal growth and resilience.

In recent times, the Covid-19 (Corona) virus has taken center stage, affecting the world both socially and economically. Sri Lanka, my beloved motherland and the pearl of the Indian Ocean, took numerous precautionary measures to contain and control the escalating situation. Despite these efforts, the virus made its way into our country. However, in the face of this adversity, Sri Lankans from all walks of life united under one flag, regardless of religion or race, to support each other and contain the virus. With the government-imposed curfew, everyone found themselves confined to their homes. This new way of life has brought about significant changes, and in this blog, I would like to share my personal experiences and observations from social media during this time.

The Shift to Work From Home (WFH)

When the Coronavirus started spreading globally, many countries went into lockdown, and organizations began implementing "Work From Home" (WFH). My friends and I discussed WFH frequently, with many looking forward to the break from commuting rather than the safety aspect. As anticipated, once the first few cases of the virus were reported in Sri Lanka, most companies transitioned to WFH.

Initially, WFH felt similar to working from the office, with the added benefit of an extra hour of sleep. However, the excitement quickly waned, and WFH became monotonous and dull due to the lack of human interaction and the uncertainty of the duration of this new normal.

Adapting to the New Normal

Like me, other citizens also adapted to WFH or took leave depending on their jobs. Initially, people enjoyed the break from work, but soon the novelty wore off, and boredom set in. To cope, people engaged in various productive activities. Those who rarely sang started sharing their performances on social media. Cooking enthusiasts showcased their culinary skills, while fitness buffs took on pull-up challenges and created innovative home workout routines. Families spent quality time together, playing card games, and engaging in other activities that rekindled the essence of family life.

Creativity and Innovation

The government released an API to provide statistics on the Coronavirus. In response, students, who usually hesitated to do their coursework, designed dashboards to present this data in a user-friendly manner. University students began attending online lectures, and school students, like my brother, utilized TV channels broadcasting educational programs to stay on track with their studies. These channels also aired classic cartoons, reminiscent of our childhood, adding a touch of nostalgia to our days.

Full-time YouTubers, whose content typically revolved around travel or fitness, had to pause their usual activities. Some created off-topic videos to maintain their income, showcasing their versatility and creativity.

My Daily Routine

As for me, I enjoy an extra hour of sleep before starting my workday. After checking my emails, I dive into my project tasks. Evenings are reserved for quality family time, a rare opportunity with everyone home. My father, also at home, has taken over dinner preparations, much to the delight of my brother and me. In my free time, I play online games with friends or watch movies, finding solace in these small joys amidst the uncertainty.

Reflecting on the Silver Lining

While I miss my friends, fast food, and trips, I acknowledge that the Coronavirus, despite its severity, has brought about positive changes. Families have grown closer, people have reconnected with their faith, and a sense of humanity and community has resurfaced. Neighbors support each other, and there is a collective effort to overcome this crisis.

A Call to Action

I urge everyone to stay home during this crucial time, supporting the military and first responders in their efforts to contain the virus. I wish a speedy recovery to those affected and remind everyone to cherish this time with their families.

Stay home! Stay safe! And enjoy this time with your loved ones!
